Stunning views in Banyalbufar
The village of Banylbufar is surrounded by the towering peaks of the Tramuntana mountains. Small houses are nestled above steep vineyards and water channels of Mallorca.
The roads wind up the mountains from the little beaches up until the top of the mountain range. The name Banyalbufar is a combination of Moorish and Catalan and means ‘founded by the sea’. It was also the Moorish, who build the irrigation system and more than 2000 trenches in the 10th century. And guess what? It is still the best water pipe system in Mallorca! The wine that once grew on those trenches was famous and is about to be re-established.
Also, today Banyalbufar is a quiet place with very little inhabitants, it is a great place for visitors and there are a great number of cafés, restaurants and bars. The German cafe 1661 Cuina de Banyalbufar is run by Germans and highly recommended! You should stop in one of the cafés or restaurants to enjoy the stunning views they offer!
Hiking from Banyalbufar to Port des Canonge
We start our hike on the road to Valldemossa and walk about 800 meters until Km 85.2. Now you will see a little parking lot nestled into the roundabout. You will recognize the right parking by the signpost for hikers!
On the left hand side of the signposts you will see a small hiking path and another wooden signpost. After a few minutes you will get to the Finca La Casbarola which you pass on your left. About 80m further, you will have to go through a gate. Now you will get to a fork in the path and head straight on. There is also an arrow leading you the way. 5 Minutes further you will get to the next fork. Here you take the path on the left that leads downhill, again, the way will be indicated. Now you reach the Puig de Ses Planes with some stunning rock formations and sea views at the Cala Corb Mari and Punta de S’Aguila. About 30 minutes later you will get to a wide road which you follow downhill. Shortly after, you will take the road to your right hand side and get to the sea front. Now you just have to cross the dry river bed of a torrent and walk straight ahead. You will now reach Port des Canonge, where you can have a little picnic or go for a swim, before walking the same way back. There are also some little restaurants, but apart from that the village is not very interesting.
How to get to Banyalbufar
You can either do this hike as an continuation of the Cami de Correus that leads form Esporles to Banylabufar (LINK) or just start in Banyalbufar. You can get to Banyalbufar by the Bus number 200, but it is fairly irregular, or by using your own transport. If you don’t have your own transport, you might choose to rent an electric scooter from Palma to get to Banyalbufar. This is a really beautiful route and you could have a stop off in Esporles!
